RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT The DVS Sciences core research and development team consists of two physical chemists, a cell biologist, an engineer-physicist, a mechanical engineer, an electrical engineer and a software engineer, together with support staff. The fundamental research is conducted through the association of the Principals with the Department of Chemistry at the University of Toronto ( StemSpec group ), and through highly successful collaborations at the University Health Network. The scientific art is converted to practical commercial technology by the engineering team at DVS Sciences. GENESIS OF THE TECHNOLOGY The technology of the CyTOF™ and MAXPAR™ was originally conceived and patented by the principals of DVS Sciences while they were working at MDS Sciex (now MDS Analytical Technologies). They moved to the University of Toronto, Institute of Biomaterials and Biomedical Engineering in 2005 to participate in the further independent development of the technology with support of a Genome Canada Applied Human Health grant and with generous support from the Ontario Institute for Cancer Research and other foundations and funders. That project developed a further 9 inventions that relate to CyTOF™ and MAXPAR™. All of the IP has now been licensed to DVS Sciences Inc. The continuing development and improvement of the technology continues to be funded by Genome Canada through a Technology Development grant, with complementary support from the Ontario Ministry of Research and Innovation and DVS co-sponsorship, as well as through an investment in DVS by the Ontario Institute for Cancer Research through the Intellectual Property Development and Commercialization program. STATUS OF THE TECHNOLOGY The CyTOF™ cell analyzer instrument was commercially launched at the GLIIFCA meeting in Pittsburgh on October 2-4, 2009. The order backlog presently provides for April 2010 delivery for new orders. The first series of MAXPAR™ antibody labeling kits is now available. These are based on our proprietary "MA" polymer structure, and are universal for all lanthanide tagging isotopes and antibodies. The reagents may be used with conventional ICP-MS analysis for solution analysis (in multi-parametric ELISA or Western Blot formats) or with the CyTOF™ for individual cell analysis. |
